hello nate, it seems odd that i am only responding to your comment now, 15 some odd months after you posted on my blog... however i never saw that comment until just now :) lol.

it doesnt appear that you have blogged much in the past several months, and according to your update on purevolume it seems as though youve been keeping it low-key.

i just wanted to say that i like your blog though, and am interested in looking through more of your posts as i get the time. your music is nice too :)

hope you are well, --- nichole.

I think St. Paul has put the whole thing in focus. In Colossians 1-14-17, in the 15-17th verses we read, "Who(Christ) is the image of the invisible God, the first born of every creature: 16 For in Him were all thngs created in neaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominations, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him and in him. 17 and he is before all, and by him all things consist."
Adam and Eve are made in the Image and Likeness of God. If Christ is the Image of God, we can say that God made man in Christ(Image of God), and that as God made Eve from Adam, so Mary is made of Christ, the First Adam. The feminine of God seems to come from the creatability of the other than God. Mary is the personification of the feminine in God and is only inferior to God.

Also note that Paul is recognized as the frontman for the early Church's missions to the Gentiles. So I'm pretty sure God wanted us to remember him as a missionary to the Gentiles, hence the constant usage of his Roman name.

Interesting, huh. Note that all those letters were written to Gentile churches. I could be mistaken, but I think Acts is the only book that clearly documents his interaction with the Jews.

I get your application about becoming all things to all people. I was just looking up the Saul/Paul thing to see if the scriptures bear out what you're saying. It is true the Saul was "also called Paul," and Acts continues to use both names for the rest of the book. The name Paul appears many more times than does Saul. Here's what I noticed. The book of Acts, written by Luke, is the only New Testament book to call him Saul. I and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Thesolonians and Philamon are all written by the Apostle Paul, and he identifies himself as Paul. I don't know if that means anything or not, I just thought I'd share what I learned.

Wow, Nate, this post is incredible.
And it holds so much meaning.
It really makes me think about my own life, and the ways that I shut out God, even unintentionally.

Thanks for taking the time on your birthday to cheer me up.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Hey Nate - thanks for sharing! It's so hard to get over those bumps sometimes. I know a year ago I was feeling similarly. My brother's car accident threw me for a huge loop, but I'm happy to say that faith prevailed. :) You can read the post here:

Thanks for sharing, it was such an eloquent introspective of your mind, body and soul. I wish I can articulate my feelings so deeply. Thanks for the inspiration to try just that.

Hmm, Nate, I think you're actually a bit backward on this one. God does not show He is masculine or feminine by the traits He exhibits. This would be to judge God by a human standard, which seems backward to me.

Rather, human beings (both male and female, and true, perhaps in differing manifestations) show their likeness to God, or their bearing His image, by the traits THEY exhibit.

In other words, we are displaying the image of God when we exhibit the traits that He exhibits. God does not display human characteristics--humans display human characteristics, and some of them are in the image of God.

I think you also ought to be careful--the Bible never describes God as feminine. You say that God has the qualities of both a warrior and a mother hen. Perhaps true, but even there, the Scriptures use a masculine metaphor (shepherd) to describe God's nurturing qualities. We must be careful when we say what the Scriptures do not say.

I appreciate you, brother, and hope you are well. I'll let you know if I'm ever anywhere near NJ.

Sure thing, Mia. The authority God gave Man in his relationship to Woman is found in Ephesians 5.22-24. Man is to be the head of his wife just as Christ is the Head of the Church. The problem comes in when a man has abused this authority.

Men have a tendency to leave out the part about Christ being Head over the Church. In other words, they forget the correlation. They are supposed to model Christ in his Lordship over the Church.

In other words, what did Christ do to show His authority over us? He gave His life for us. In the same way, Man's authority over his wife comes only insomuch as he is willing to give his life.

Right on, Nate! I've come to that conclusion myself and completely agree. I think that creation expresses the Creator, so when you think about these things, we learn so much about God and who He is.

One other thing to think about: when I was single, I would hear people lament that they weren't "complete" until they were married. I disagreed. Though the fullness of God is seen when the sexes are united, I think that just as Jesus is completely God and the Father is completely God and the Spirit is completely God in their own individual rights, when they come together they are the fullness of God. I haven't thought much about it beyond that point, and perhaps an examination of "complete" and "fullness" are in order. But that's the conclusion I came to anyway.

I haven’t thought much about it beyond that point, and perhaps an examination of “complete” and “fullness” are in order. But that’s the conclusion I came to anyway.

Great stuff Jamie & Nate - I'd say the fact that you are even *aware* of your struggle has put you much farther ahead than most men.

And just so you know, the fear is common to women as well - to quote Nate:

"No, I’m afraid because of myself. I’m afraid because I know my flaws and my failures. I know my sins and my selfishness. I’ve seen myself falter time and time again…I’ve suffered through the guilt of my sin, and I’ve been robbed of my dreams. I’m afraid of the evil that I’m capable of."

Any self-aware person, man or woman, is going to look themselves in the mirror and see these things one day. When faced with my own failures (of which there are many) I continually must ask myself: "Is this the truest thing about me?" And the answer is "No." Christ's purchase of my soul has given me the chance to live as He created Woman to be, but it does require daily submission to Him and a steady dose of His Truth. Whether you be a man or a woman, your true identity, and the courage to live in that place comes only from Christ, and only He is strong enough to enable us to dwell there.

Thank you so much for acknowledging something that most men are afraid to discuss. I will be praying for you, as well as the men in my life.

Thanks for your comment!

Brother, I hear you. And I too feel your fear. For years I have struggled and fought tooth and nail for ever ounce of manhood that I have, I have more willpower than many and enough courage to face my fears yet it is not enough. I need to continually submit to Christ's leadership and as a leader be lead by Him but is is so hard and so often I feel confused and disoriented as if i was walking though a fog. I pray that I get there one day but it will not be by my own accord but by grace.

There are so few true men out there (honestly I have had the privilege of knowing some real men but at best there are only a handful) we toss that word "Men" around but it so cheap and easy to say it that it rarely carries any true weight. I think the reason that there are so few men in our culture ( even in the church) is that most guys have no idea of what a man is (as God defines it not as the world does) guys are like blind fools stumbling in a dark alley at midnight unsure of what they are looking for. Go ahead, ask a handful of guys if they can define what a "man" is, they can't do it because they don't know how. It's sad but true. but there is hope, God would not call us to something if he did not have a plan for us. It is not easy and it requires sacrifice and obedience, (not perfection) but when Christ has had His way with us we will shine with the true glory of what we were made to be, men.

if you want to check out a great speaker go to DM.org and search for the talks given by Mark Fodale. he does a great job inspiring guys to be men and shows us how to get there.

Good for you, Nate. Pain is a gift that tells us something is wrong. Brokenness is a gift that reveals we need to be fixed. The world will not take the church seriously until we come to grips with reality and we stop pretending we are above the reality of life just because we know the name of Christ. They will stand up and watch though, when we respond differently than they would to pain and brokenness because we know Christ and we have a hope not of this world.

Masterfully written, Nate. There are no unbroken people in this world, but what those people do with their own brokenness is what matters. Whether to wallow in self-pity or to collect the pieces and attempt to become whole again through fellowship with others and with Christ's love... both are frightening in their own ways. Me, I'd rather play the part of giant risk-taker, and make that attempt at wholeness through admitting to brokenness.
